With having 2 kiddos who have both loved being swaddled, I’ve used lots of different swaddles. I have been asked a lot about what our favorites are and why so I thought I would put together a huge guide of all of our favorites and pros/cons to them.
We like different swaddles for different ages. We tried several different swaddles to figure out which were the best for our babies which you may have to do as well. It’s kind of a trial and error situation, but worth it to give your baby the best sleep possible.
I’m going to break the guide down into newborn and baby to see what worked for each age for us.
NEWBORN
Swaddle Blankets: We had tons of swaddle blankets for both Dominic and Giulietta.
PROS: They are cozy and comforting and very soft. The prints are so sweet too. I loved using these for nap time while in the MamaRoo/swing or for covering them up while in the car seat or stroller. Also great for laying on and playing.
CONS: My kids never really slept well in these because they could always wiggle their arms out of them. I also could never get them really tight so I was always a little nervous having them sleep at night in them.
Halo SleepSack Swaddle: Our go to for the newborn stage
PROS: So easy to swaddle the baby. Different fabrics to choose from depending on weather. Can grow with the baby as they can be swaddled with the arms in or out
CONS: They are velcroed together, which some babies can startle from when taking them out of the swaddle, but that was never an issue for us.
Love to Dream Swaddle Up: Dominic seemed to like this a bit more than Giulietta
PROS: This allows for the baby to touch their face, but still helps to not startle them when they move in the night. Very easy to swaddle as it’s just a zipper
CONS: It doesn’t swaddle your baby in the traditional way. Dominic didn’t mind this, but I found that Giulietta preferred the above options more as this wasn’t tight enough for her.
BABY
Halo SleepSack Swaddle: We use this swaddle the most as it’s so versatile. Pros and cons are the same as the newborn stage above. I put it here as well because you can swaddle with the arms out for when baby is starting to roll.
Love to Dream Swaddle Up 50/50: This is a great transition swaddle for when baby is beginning to roll. We loved it with both kids. Even though G didn’t love the traditional Love to Dream, she loves this one now with having both of her arms out.
PROS: Easy to transition from being completely swaddled to the arms out by just zipping off one sleeve at a time.
CONS: Your baby may not enjoy this one, if they didn’t love the original Love to Dream Swaddle Up.
Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit: We used this with Dominic only. He was very into being swaddled and was having a hard time transitioning out of the swaddle. This helped for a few days so he could get used to having his arms out.
PROS: Your baby will look adorable, LOL! It’s helpful for transitioning out of the swaddle.
CONS: Your baby may find it uncomfortable with all the extra bulk on them. We tried it with G once and she wasn’t into it.
Sleep sack: This is another option to what we have used with both kids.
PROS: Very similar to the Halo SleepSack Swaddles so it makes it easy to transition to a sleep sack when baby is ready. Almost like a wearable blanket
CONS: If your little one didn’t like to be swaddled, this may not be an option they enjoy to use as a blanket.
Now, clearly, there are TONS of other swaddles on the market. I can only speak to the ones that we used so hopefully this gives you some insight as to what may work for you and your child.
If one isn’t working, try another one. That’s the best way we were able to determine which swaddles were the best for us.
