Neutral Christmas Decor in the Living Room

Neutral Christmas Decor in the Living Room

Our living room is all decorated for Christmas and this year I went pretty neutral.

Neutral Christmas decor will always have a special place in my heart, especially for the living room.

I love a good traditional Christmas style, but I also love neutral Christmas decor! Since I went really fun and colorful downstairs in our family room/playroom, I wanted to do something different in our living room!

How to decorate shelves for Christmas

First, I removed all the old decor from the shelves and cleaned each shelf. I love starting with a blank slate so that my creativity isn’t swayed from past designs, plus it gives me space to breathe and see all the space I’m working with.

After that, I like to work from the bottom up. My ‘formula’ for styling shelves is to have larger items on the bottom and as I move up the shelves, the objects get smaller/closer together. Similar to a pyramid.

I also like to make sure I have lots of the same colors/textures sprinkled throughout the shelves. This makes the shelves look cohesive and put together without being super matchy and symmetrical.

I used lots of my white houses, all different gold and white bottle brush trees I’ve collected over the years, wooden/rattan baskets and bowls, lights, and for some contrast, some black pieces.

I didn’t want to crowd the shelves too much, so most only have a few items on each shelf. I like all the negative space or the space that doesn’t have any items. The fresh white with all the neutral colors makes me think of wintertime.

Of course my shelves wouldn’t be complete without some plants so those are on display too!

Faux Christmas Mantle Idea

We don’t have a fireplace in our house, but I like to pretend the TV stand is a fireplace and decorate it as I would a mantle. I use a fun piece of art I find on YouTube on our TV to make it appear like artwork, rather than the TV.

This year’s ‘mantle’ I used my faux pine garland draped across. I used 2 pieces, one that swoops and one that lays on the top. I then swooped some wool ball garland and lights. On the side that I just draped the garland on top, I put some metallic ornament garland. I like how asymmetrical it looks with one laying flat and one side swooping down.

On the sides of the TV, I used some candles, a reindeer, and some cone trees.

Living Room Decor

As for the rest of the room, I kept with the same neutral colors. I hung up a fun tea towel on the wall that has a really cute festive scene, added my favorite wreath pillows which I have had for years, put this beautiful red fair isle blanket down which is a nice pop of color with all the neutral tones.

For the coffee table, I kept it simple with a plant, a concrete tree, and a battery operated candle.

This living room is where our real tree will go so we will have the tree in the corner by the antique sewing machine next weekend!

I hope this gives you some new ideas for using neutral Christmas decor in your home this holiday season! Happy decorating!
