Gallery Wall Inspiration — Aratari At Home

I love a good gallery wall and wanted to give you some inspiration for creating one in your home!

A gallery wall is such a fun way to accent a space in a room so I hope this provides lots of inspiration for recreating one in your home!

Gallery walls are an easy way to display a grouping of art so that you don’t have to pick just one thing to hang up! They are also great space fillers when you have a large wall.

Gallery walls can be tricky when figuring out the location of pieces so I thought I would walk you through my thought process behind the 2 gallery walls we have in our home to give you some ideas!

LIVING ROOM GALLERY WALL

The gallery wall in our living room is above the vintage sewing machine. This was a bare wall that was kind of awkward and in the corner. I wanted to hang some art up, but couldn’t find a large piece I loved.

I decided to do an eclectic mix of art prints that coordinate with the living room

The key to a gallery wall is to have a variety of sizes and colors/patterns. You want it to feel cohesive.

Scale is very important too when considering a gallery wall. Too small or too large of items will feel out of place. This is why I love mixing up the sizes of the items so it’s a good balance.

I like to find the art work first and then work around the wall space. I wanted to keep this gallery wall simple with 4 pieces of art and bring in the colors of the room. I browsed Etsy for a while looking at art prints that spoke to me. You can print out the digital art prints and have really easy and pretty art work for your home.

Next, I like to find coordinating frames, but again, nothing that is too matchy. I did a couple black frames, in different sizes, a white frame, and a wood frame. I love the mix, but still feels like one cohesive gallery wall.

For placement, I like to lay it out on the floor to be able to play around with spacing and where I want the pieces to be hung. I’m not too particular with spacing because I like different spacing between each piece. I wasn’t going for a symmetrical look, rather a mixed up gallery wall so I like the different sized spacing. Gallery walls like this are easier as they don’t require measuring as much.

Now, it’s time to hang it up! I started with the top piece and worked my way around clockwise. Stepping back after piece was hung to make sure it’s how I liked it.

It’s really an art form and you can do whatever feels right to you!

For Gigi’s wall, I wanted to do something big to balance out the somewhat odd positioning of her bed. Her room is small and this was really the only space her bed could fit. I wanted a gallery wall that filled up the whole space above her bed and was filled with some of her favorite things.

I also wanted to include some non art work pieces. She loves butterflies and I had this metal butterfly that I wanted to hang up. I also had this hoop art that says ‘I love you’ all over it which I wanted to incorporate.

I did the same thing I did for the living room gallery wall and laid everything out on the floor to figure out spacing. I wanted hers to feel whimsical so I wanted the butterfly to look as if it was flying off which is why it is not straight. I also wanted to make sure that the non art work pieces were opposite from each other so that there was a good balance in between.

I like having the big and small pieces intertwined throughout as well as the colors spread out. It gives a more balanced look as your eye pops around looking for similar items/colors/patterns/prints/frames/sizes/etc.

Gallery walls are meant to be fun! Go crazy and wild and do what feels good to you! I would say my biggest tip is to pay attention to scale and make sure a really large wall doesn’t have a bunch of tiny pieces or a really small wall with huge pieces. Again, not a set in stone rule, just something I like to really pay attention to!
