Since having kids, we have gone on many road trips as a family. Especially since my family is from MA and we live in NY, we have done that trip back home many times.

Over the years, I have learned a few things to make traveling with a newborn a little easier. Nothing is ever fool proof as babies are always switching things up, but I feel if I follow these tips, our trips tend to be a bit smoother.

  • Make a list of everything you need for yourself and the baby include clothing, shoes, toiletries, diapers/wipes, food, bottles, etc so that you know in advance what you need to bring with you

  • Pack the car the night before with everything you possibly can so that when it’s time to leave the next day, you aren’t rushing around

  • Feed the baby right before you plan to leave and leave as soon as you are done feeding the baby. Have any other kids loaded into the car so that when you’re done, you just put the baby in the car seat and go! This helps you extend the drive time between feedings.

  • If you are able to sit next to your baby, do it so that you can help soothe the baby, give the pacifier, or play with the baby

  • Be prepared to stop more often than you’re used to. Get it in your head from the start that the trip will take longer than usual so that you are already setting your expectations

  • Pack diapers, wipes, bottles, formula, nursing covers, burp clothes, etc in an easily accessible spot in the car

  • Bring things that are familiar to the baby meaning sheets for the pack and play, swaddles, blankets, etc. Anything that could bring the baby comfort while away from what they are used to

  • Use a baby carrier when out and about. It will make things easier on you and the baby when exploring

  • Relax and enjoy as much as you can. Expect there to be some delays in travel time. If you are relaxed, chances are your baby will feed off of that energy and be more relaxed too

  • If you have older kiddos too, we find that having lots of snacks, headphones for a kindle or iPad, little books/toys, and LCD drawing tablets are fun and make the ride a little more enjoyable for them

I’ve done my fair share of traveling with newborns so I hope this list gives you some new insight you may not have thought of. You really can’t do anything wrong as long as you are caring for the baby as you would in your own home. The baby won’t notice too much that they are not in the same surroundings since newborns tend to sleep most of the day anyways.
