Fire Prevention Safety Tips with First Alert

Fire Prevention Month is the perfect time to gather your family to learn tips for fire and carbon monoxide safety. I’m excited to share all that we have learned to better prepare our home in case of a fire. It is important to be protected and have safety measures in place to help protect our family as best we can!
There are several things you can do to protect your family! These include smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, fire extinguishers, and a home safety checklist from First Alert!
INSTALL SMOKE CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) ALARMS
There should be a smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm on every level of your home, along with in every bedroom. A little saying to help you remember: ‘every level, every bedroom!’ The alarms should be tested regularly, and the batteries should be replaced every six months. This 10-Year Sealed Battery Combination Smoke & CO Alarm from First Alert has a 10-year sealed battery which is super convenient. There are no battery replacements or late-night, low-battery chirps for a decade. They do not last forever, and need to be replaced after 10 years!
We have set up an escape plan and will practice with the kids how to escape from each room. A good tip is to try and practice 2 times a year and set up a safe spot outside to meet. Since our kiddos are still so young, we have this plan in place for John Paul and I to help them out. This helps us to be on the same page of knowing what to do in case of a fire.
HAVE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Did you know the # 1 cause of home fires is unattended cooking? Having a fire extinguisher easily accessible in the kitchen is so important. We added a Rechargeable Home Fire Extinguisher under our sink to be extra safe.
A fire extinguisher should also be placed on every level of the home. Other areas to consider adding a fire extinguisher are the garage, by a grill, or by a laundry room.
A simple way to remember how to use a fire extinguisher is with this acronym P.A.S.S.
P - Pull the pin
A- Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
S- Squeeze the trigger
S- Sweep from side to side
HOME SAFETY CHECKLIST
The kids had a lot of fun helping us make this home safety checklist. I drew a map of our home and labeled each space. We then walked around the house and the kids added stickers to each space that had a fire extinguisher and smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm.
This was helpful to see visually where we need to add more alarms and what we are good with! This was great to help teach the kids more about fire safety too!
