DIY Salt Dough Garland

I made this DIY salt dough garland for a fun Halloween mantle, but you could make this for any season!

This DIY salt dough garland is fun for kiddos and adults, comes together super quick, and can be made for any season or holiday!

We had so much fun making this salt dough with our friends! It's easy for kids to help and makes a ton of ornaments! They will quickly learn they aren’t making cookies when they ‘try’ the dough.

I decided to make a Halloween garland with the salt dough, but you could tailor this dough to any shape depending on the cookie cutter you use! Since I don’t decorate too much for Halloween, I decided on pumpkins which can also be for Fall and Thanksgiving! I love double duty decor so I knew this shape wouldn’t pigeon hole me to one Holiday, but work for the entire season!

SALT DOUGH INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups of all purpose flour (have some extra available, in case the dough is too sticky)

  • 1 cup of salt

  • 1 cup of water

  • Food Coloring (optional)

  • Paint (optional)

  • String/twine

SALT DOUGH RECIPE

  1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the salt and flour

  3. Slowly add in the water, little by little until a dough forms

  4. Knead the dough until it’s all well combined

    • We added about 1/4 cup more flour because the consistency was very sticky and sticking to the surface while trying to cut out the ornaments

  5. If adding food coloring, add it to the dough and knead it all together

  6. Roll out the dough to about 1/4”-1/2” thick

  7. Cut out desired shapes using cookie cutters

  8. Using a toothpick, poke a hole in the top of the shapes

  9. Place on baking sheet and bake for about 1 hour

    • Check on the ornaments after about 45 minutes to see if they are done or not

  10. Allow the ornaments to cool completely

  11. If painting, paint when they are completely cool

  12. String the ornaments onto desired length of string/twine

  13. Tie the ornaments to a longer piece of string/twine and hang from desired space!

I think the pumpkin salt dough garland came out SO cute! They are just a simple touch to make the mantle have some movement and texture.

I’m thinking of doing this for Christmas too for our Christmas tree! Stay tuned ;)
